Why it sparks inspiration

Wondering what Alberta's parents think about cultural relevance in early learning and child care programs? This report explores parents’ views on the cultural relevance of child care services in Alberta, highlighting its importance for ensuring inclusivity and equitable access. It summarizes findings from a 2022 survey of over 1,400 parents with children under six years of age. The results showed that cultural relevance is a key factor in selecting child care arrangements for many families, especially families from non-White backgrounds. The report recommends specific actions, such as setting clear goals for cultural relevance, creating practical implementation plans, and continuously monitoring progress to ensure that child care services are truly responsive to diverse cultural needs.

"Cultural relevance is an aspect of inclusivity. How cultural relevance is interpreted and implemented could determine whether the full range of families in Alberta are able to have equitable access to early learning and child care."
